The Impossible Cut

Lesson 4 - Lean about the impossible cut and what to do about it

The Impossible Cut is one of the hardest design challenges for new stained glass artists to wrap their heads around, but once you get it, designing your own panels becomes an absolute doddle.

Now that you understand how glass breaks, you can start to see your break lines in your design before you even cut. That’s the trick.

Fun fact: even though something like a blue sky might be divided by multiple break lines (or solder lines), your eye still reads it as one continuous sky. You’ll see this all the time in church windows. The overall image stays intact, even though it's made up of hundreds, of pieces and break lines.

Hope this all makes sense! If it doesn’t, send your questions my way.
